Reasons for Seeking Therapy
People come to therapy for many reasons. Sometimes there is a clear hardship, perhaps anxiety, depression, a relationship problem, or a period of change. At other times, there is simply a sense that something is not going well, or that familiar difficulties keep returning despite efforts to understand or change them. Therapy can offer a place to become more curious about what may be happening beneath the surface.
How I Work
I work from a psychodynamic perspective. This means paying close attention to your thoughts and feelings, your relationships, your history, and to what develops between us in the therapy. I will encourage you to speak as openly as you can, without feeling that you need to arrive with the right subject or already know what something means. Much of the work involves thinking together about patterns or experiences that may gradually become clearer over time.
The Aim of Therapy
The aim is not only to feel better, although relief from distress is important. It is also to understand yourself more fully and to become less constrained by ways of thinking, feeling, and relating that may have developed outside of your awareness. That kind of understanding can take time, but it can make different ways of living and relating more possible.
